Abstract

1,124,146. Mechanical seals. M. AMIRAULT, and P. DESTOUMIEUX. 27 June, 1966 [2 July, 1965; 10 Feb., 1966], No. 28708/66. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal, a diaphragm 2 fitted between a casing 1 and a sealing ring 6 is provided with an intermediate portion 15 which, upon assembly between the parts 12, 14 to be sealed, deflects towards the fluid under pressure surrounding the seal. The sealing ring 6 is urged into rubbing contact with shaft shoulder 14 by a spring 9 and the diaphragm is clamped in position by reinforcing rings 4, 8. To facilitate the distorsion of the diaphragm, a recess 18, Fig. 9, may be provided; for ease of manufacture, the recess may be formed by moulding the diaphragm into either of the shapes illustrated in Figs. 10 and 12 (not shown), and distorting it upon assembly on the sealing ring, Figs. 11 and 14, respectively (not shown). The sealing ring may be made of metal or a suitable moulded material and formed polygonally instead of circularly. Means may be provided for preventing the sealing ring from rotating on the inner flange 7 of the casing.
