Abstract

998,478. Mechanical seals. STEELS & BUSKS Ltd. June 24, 1964 [June 28, 1963], No. 25724/63. Heading F2B. A shaft seal for a rotary pump comprises a rubber &c. sealing member 9 comprising a cup portion 10 with a peripheral flange 12 that sealingly contacts a shoulder 13 on the pump housing 1 and a hollow boss portion 11 upstanding centrally from the base of the cup portion end having at its free end face, in sealing contact with the pump impeller 3. The boss portion 11 carries at its free end a carbon ring 14 which in use is urged against the impeller hub 15 by deformation of the boss wall due to pressure of the liquid in the pump delivery chamber 8. The cup portion 10 and flange 12 are reinforced by an embedded steel ring 16, 17.
