Abstract
630,024. Stuffing-boxes. HRDLICKA, E. J. Jan. 7, 1947, No. 559. [Class 122(v)] A wiper ring assembly for a reciprocating shaft 20 comprises a packing unit 30 screwed into a housing 14 containing packing rings 28. The nut 30 has an angular groove 42 containing a ring 50 of material resistant to the operating liquid and having oppositely facing thin edges in contact with the plunger 20. Behind the ring 50 in the groove 42 is a ring 65 of material subject to volumetric swelling in the operating liquid, which forces the ring 50 against an inclined face 43 of the groove 42 and maintains the edges of the ring in contact with the shaft and also forces the inner edge independently into contact with the shaft. Excess oil is collected in a groove 68 in the nut 30 and passes to the exterior through a port 70.
