Abstract

923,098. Centrifugal pumps; stuffing-box substitutes. WILKINSON RUBBER LINATEX Ltd., and C. NEW. Jan. 17, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 2239/60. Classes 110 (1) and 122 (5). The shaft 11 of a centrifugal pump which is sealed under normal running conditions by auxiliary vanes 13 creating a suction where the shaft enters the casing 14, is sealed when the pump is stationary by a mechanical seal comprising a diaphragm 19 secured at its outer periphery to the casing and at its inner periphery to one end of a sleeve 15 whose other end contacts a sealing ring insert in a ring 22 fixed to the shaft. When the pump is running the suction created by the vanes 13 acts on the diaphragm 19 to retain the sleeve 15 out of contact with the ring 24.
