Abstract
936,599. Stuffing-box substitutes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 31, 1962 [Aug. 30, 1961], No. 31211/61. Class 122 (5). A steam turbine or other rotary shaft 1 is sealed where it extends through a casing wall 3 by means comprising a member 2 rotatable with the shaft and defining a race 8 concentric with the shaft and a stationary disc 11 having holes in its periphery through which fluid, for example water, is ejected to form a ring of fluid which revolves with the race 8 at a depth sufficient to immerse the rim of the disc. The race 8 is formed by a ring 9 secured to the member 2 and having axial grooves 10 to assist in impelling the water. The disc 11 is a flange at one end of a sleeve 6 supported at its other end in a gland housing 4 and water is supplied from a source 5<SP>1</SP> via an annulus 5, bores 13, groove 14 and bores 15 and 16 to the periphery of the disc.
