Abstract

480,524. Stuffing box substitutes. SPARGO, R. J. June 23, 1936, No. 17489. Convention date, July 8, 1935. [Class 122 (v)] In a liquid seal for a shaft &c. 2 the liquid chamber 10 is bounded by flexible packings 12 clamped to the casing 5 and having bulbous ends 15 bearing on the shaft. Excessive pressure in the casing 5 presses the bulb of the inner ring more closely to the shaft. The pressure between the outer ring and the shaft is adjustable by means of a gland 20. The seal may be applied to centrifugal pumps or trunnions of rotary grinding-mills.
