Abstract

487,587. Stuffing - box substitutes. SPARGO, R. J. Jan. 24, 1938, No. 2291. [Class 122 (v)] A liquid seal for relatively rotating members, e.g. the shaft of a pump for ore pulp, comprises a liquid chamber 9 closed by packing rings 11, 12 having lip portions offset towards the chamber and a further packing 10 on the side remote from the atmosphere having a lip portion offset away from the chamber. Grooves 24 in the ring 11 permit slight leakage of sealing liquid to lubricant and exclude grit from the packings. The pressure of ring 12 on the shaft may be adjusted by a gland 19. Deformation of the rings 10, 11 is prevented by a supporting ring 25. Specification 480,524 is referred to.
