Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A gland for a rotatable shaft passing through a wall of a pressure vessel comprises an annular rotor 1 mounted on the shaft and divided into radial passages by vanes 7 for communicating with first and second recesses 12, 15 provided in first and second casings 9, 14, the recesses extending part way and in succession around the circumferences of the casings and communicating with the outside and inside of the vessel by first and second ducts 13, 16. The recesses 12, 15 are tapered in opposite directions, Fig. 1 (not shown), and each extend through 150 degrees. In operation, fluid attempting to leak from the vessel flows through duct 16 and is caused to traverse repeatedly through the radial passages in the rotor 1 to receive a pressure increase at each traverse. The pressure so generated prevents leakage of any further fluid. Leakage may be prevented at low speeds and at rest by use of an auxiliary seal in the form of spring-loaded segments which, under normal running conditions, are centrifugally operated.
