Abstract
652,109. Stuffing-box substitutes; turbines. YATES, H. G., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Feb. 24, 1948, No. 5512. [Classes 110(iii) and 122(v)] In a shaft gland comprising a stationary member having flexibility Which can be either radial or axial and having a locating face or faces respectively furnished with a plurality of shallow recesses, pressure fluid is fed to each recess by way of a separate restricting orifice, the locating face or faces being adjacent without contact under running conditions to a corresponding face or faces on the shaft and where the member has axial flexibility the faces are perpendicular to the direction of flexibility and where the member has radial flexibility, the face faces the shaft periphery, while the other adjacent parts of the member are spaced-with relatively large clearance from the shaft. A diaphragm b, in a turbine casing a, Fig. 1, has axial flexibility and is housed in a groove f in the shaft g of the turbine, and pressure fluid is fed by holes c in the diaphragm b to orifice i which open into the recesses h in the locating faces e. In a modification, the diaphragm may embody an annular groove which embraces a collar on the shaft. In a further embodiment, a flexible tube k, Fig. 2, secured to the casing a is connected to a sleeve j the inner face of which is provided with two axially spaced sets of at least three circumferentially spaced shallow recesses w, each of which is fed with pressure fluid by an orifice i opening into a supply duct m. A flexible pipe or pipes are employed to convey fluid to the ducts m.
