Abstract

830,059. Stuffing-box substitutes. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Oct. 15, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 32261/57. Class 122 (5). The shaft 10 of a rotary pump intended to pump radio-active carbon dioxide is sealed where it passes through the pump casing 11 by means comprising a ring 14 carried by the casing and having an end face 15 that opposes a corresponding face 21 of a ring 22 carried by the shaft, and has two spaced annular channels 16, 17, therein, the inner channel 16 communicating with a source of compressed-air at a pressure greater than that of the gas in the pump casing space 29, which air flows from the channel 16 to maintain a clearance between the faces 15 and 21, and the outer channel 17 being maintained at a pressure below that in the space 29 to receive air flowing outwardly from the channel 16 and also any gas leaking from the space 29. The carbon ring 14 is fixed to a backing member 13 secured to the casing 11 and the steel ring 22 is secured to a ring 26 connected by outer and inner bellows 24 and 25 to a mounting ring 23 fixed to a flange 20 on the shaft. The channels 16 and 17 communicate respectively with a compressed air supply passage 18 and a drain passage 19. The space 28 between the bellows 24, 25 is corrected by a passage 27 with the drain channel 17. In operation, compressed-air admitted to the channel 16 separates the faces 15 and 21 by a small clearance through which air escapes radially inwardly to the atmosphere through aperture 12 and radially outwardly to the drain channel 17 which also collects any carbon dioxide leaking inwardly through the clearance. In modifications, the carbon ring is axially movably mounted by being connected to the pump casing either by inner and outer bellows or by a piston and cylinder type mounting and co-operates with an axially fixed ring secured to the shaft, compressed-air being supplied to the end face of the carbon ring through a flexible pipe that may enter through the space between the bellows.
