Abstract
639,293. Fluid bearings. YATES, H. G., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Feb. 16, 1948, No. 4492. [Class 12 (i)] A combined fluid journal and thrust bearing comprises a split bearing e, f having a plurality of, shallow recesses g in the inner periphery which are supplied with fluid under pressure through nozzles h and a shaft d having collars b, c which embrace the end faces of the members e, f and are separated therefrom by fluid leaving the journal portion of the bearing. Air may be employed as the pressure fluid. The bearing may be supported in the wall of a machine casing, the fluid entering the casing being of such a nature that its presence is not detrimental to the working of the machine, e.g. the fluid may be steam in the case of a steam turbine. The invention may be applied to pedestal bearings.
