Abstract

583,194. Stuffing-box substitutes. BELDAM, W. R., and BELDAM ASBESTOS CO., Ltd. June 15, 1944, No. 11461. [Class 122 (v)] In a stuffing-box of the type fitted with a neck-bush 2, Fig. 1, wherein packing rings 7 surrounding a shaft 3 and backed by resilient means are compressed axially and expanded radially by a gland 4, the backing is resilient sleeve-like lining 8, not of coiled form, in which the rings 7 may be inserted prior to compression. In a modification, the lining is of such length as to fit between the gland and the neck-bush. In a further modification, the lining terminates short of the bush 2, Fig. 3, and pressure fluid reaches spaces 8a in the lining via radial apertures 10 in an annular distance piece 11, and a space 9 to effect transverse expansion of the lining.
