Abstract
570,053. Stuffing-box substitutes. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO., Ltd., and LYDDON, P. E. Nov. 1, 1943, No. 18048. [Class 122 (v)] A packing between a shaft and a surrounding housing comprises a collar 3 keyed to the shaft to slide axially thereon and presenting a radial surface to contact Wtitn a gland ring 6 of the housing, the inner and outer surfaces of the collar having a throttling fit with the shaft and housing, e.g. by packing grooves 12. A stop may prevent further axial movement of the collar after a certain amount of wear. The collar may be pressed axially by a spring or by difference of steam pressure in a turbine. Ducts 14 may equalise pressure on the two sides shown. Specification 569,864 is referred to.
