In a shaft packing comprising a ring formed by larger and smaller segments 1, 2 and in which only the larger segments 1 are pressed into contact with the shaft 4 by the pressure of the sealed fluid, the bearing pressure of those segments on the shaft is reduced by providing in their inner surfaces grooves 8 to which the fluidpressure is admitted. The smaller segments 2 have a clearance 5 with the shaft and the ring is surrounded by a garter spring 3. The grooves 8 terminate short of each end of the segments 1 and communicate by radial holes 7 with the outside of the ring. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 two pairs of segmental sealing-rings 9 are housed in each compartment of a gland box 10, the rings 9 being identical to the ring shown in Fig. 1 except that only the downstream ring of each pair is provided with the grooves 8 and holes 7. The rings of each pair are disposed with their joint surfaces staggered and an axially extending groove 12 in the bore of the segments 1 of each downstream ring connects the groove 8 with the clearance 5 between the shaft and the smaller segment 2 of the adjacent upstream ring. The groove 12 may be used in addition to, or as an alternative to, the radial holes 7 to admit fluid pressure to the grooves 8. Pins 11 prevent rotation of the rings. The rings may be of carbon, graphite or other bearing material. Specification 562,591 is referred to.
