Abstract

19,968. Knight, P. Sept. 1. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A packing for a shaft &c. is shown in Fig. 1 applied to a turbine dummy piston. Pairs of yielding metal rings 4<c>, 5<c>, secured between spacing - rings 6, bear against the surfaces of grooves 15, with inclined sides, formed either in the turbine casing 3 or in a separate liner. The rings may be conical as shown, or flat, the rings of a pair in the latter case being separated by a spacing-ring. The rings are pressed against a shoulder on the dummy-piston or shaft by an end ring 13 secured by bolts, or by a screwed ring. Pressure fluid may be allowed to escape from the grooves 15 by perforations in the outer ring 4<c> of each pair.
