Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for a rotating shaft or casing consists of a loose ring 3, Fig. 1, pressed by the fluid pressure, aided, if necessary, by springs, against the ends of a sleeve 2 carried by the packing box and a sleeve 1 on the shaft. The sleeve 2 has an outer flange secured against a shoulder in the box by a gland 7 and an inner flange forming part of the seating of the ring 3. The sleeve 1 is movable on the shaft and contains packing compressed by a gland 6a. The end abutting the sleeve 2 and a collar 1<a> on the sleeve 1 are formed with radial grooves to permit escape of leakage. The ring 3 has radial grooves at its inner end and is preferably hollow and flexible with a deep groove opposite the clearance between the sleeves 1, 2. In modificaltions, the sleeve is formed in concentric parts with a diaphragm between the parts secured by screw caps or sprung into grooves in the parts. Alternatively, one of the parts may be a split ring or packing rings 11<b>, Fig. 6, may be provided between the concentric parts 11, 11<a> of the ring. The shoulder in the packing box may be dispensed with, the sleeve being secured by studs or by projections 23 engaging holes in the box. In the later case part of the box is removable to permit insertion of the sleeve. The inner sleeve may be located by its packing 26 engaging a groove in the shaft. Alternatively, the inner sleeve may be replaced by a shoulder on the shaft.
