Abstract

607,569. Stuffing-boxes. BROWN, W. A., and LE GRAND, SUTCLIFF, & GELL, Ltd. Feb. 8, 1946, No. 4024. [Class 122 (v)] A stuffing-box for oil well or like installations, consisting of a primary sealing means in the form of a packing ring or rings 3 which are maintained in sealing contact with the polished rod 2, passing through the centre of the cylindrical casing 1, by means of the adjusting ring 6 bearing on a pressure sleeve 5. A secondary sealing means, consisting of a tapered rubber or other elastic sleeve 8, which is accommodated in the portion 9 of the casing 1 fits into position with a wedge action, but has an initial clearance fit 11. Pressure can be applied to the wide end of the sleeve 8 by a pair of diametrically opposite cam discs 12 operated by the handle'16, thereby maintaining a sealing engagement with the polished rod 2, during which the main sealing means can be removed and replaced when necessary.
