615,780. Packing rings. DENNY, D. F. Aug. 17, 1946, No. 24559. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A packing ring for a piston or stuffing-box comprises a ring A of resilient material, of circular cross-section and of greater diameter than an annular groove B in which it is located. The face D of the groove, remote from the high pressure is undercut at an angle so as to partially accommodate the ring A when the pressure is increased, and so reduce the area of contact between the ring A and the working face. This area may be controlled by altering the angle of the face D and the hardness of the ring A. A duct E allows fluid trapped between the groove and the ring A to escape.
