Abstract
606,001. Packing for stuffing-boxes and pistons. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS (MESSIER), Ltd., (formerly MESSIER AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENT, Ltd.), SHARP, C. W., and ORLOFF, G. Feb. 15, 1946, Nos. 4881 and 4882. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A packing comprises a member 5 of soft resilient material, placed within and protruding from a metallic member 1 which is formed with a deformable lip 3 and engages a stationary member 4 so as together with the soft member 5 to close the gap between the member 4 and a movable member 2 to effect the seal at low pressure, whilst at high pressure the lip is deformed so as alone to effect the seal. Alternatively the lip 3 may be partially deformed at low pressure to close the gap, preventing extrusion of the soft member into the gap, the seal being effected by the lip and the soft member 5. The packing may be applied to a piston or may be secured to a cylinder to seal a piston-rod.
