Abstract

679.018. Piston packing. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. March 24, 1950 [March 25, 1949], No. 8214/49. Class 122(i) A seal between two relatively movable members comprises a packing ring normally clear of at least one of said members and deformed into sealing contact therewith by the movement relative to the ring of a pressure member subject to the pressure of the fluid to be sealed against and having an annular ridge of wedge shaped cross section which engages a V-shaped groove in the ring. A piston 3 in a cylinder 4 carries a packing ring 1 mounted on a flange 2 on the piston 3. A pressure member 6 slidably mounted on the piston rod and having a cylindrical boss 7 sliding in a recess in the piston containing a spring 8, has holes 11 and an annular wedge shaped portion 10 projecting into a V-shaped groove 5 in the ring 1. A stop collar 12 is secured to the shaft and sealing rings 9, 13 are provided between the member 6 and the shaft and recess. The ring 1 is clear of the cylinder 4 until fluid pressure acting on the member 6 forces the wedge 10 into the groove 5. The member 6 may be subjected to an initial standing fluid pressure.
