Abstract

1,243,082. Hydraulic actuators. WEBLEY & SCOTT Ltd. Dec.5, 1968 [Oct. 1, 1968], No.46454/68. Heading F1P. [Also in Division B8] A hydraulic fluid powered piston and cylinder unit is provided with an annular groove 13 in the cylinder 11 accommodating a spring metal piston ring 20 of rectangular cross-section and having a split 29, which urges itself inwardly against the piston 21 to enter an annular recess 22 in the piston when this comes in register with the groove 13, the piston having a shoulder (e.g. the lower radial face of the recess 22) to engage the piston ring and thereby positively limit the piston stroke in one direction. The piston may have a diametral bore 30 housing a bar 31 having piston-ring engaging recesses 33 and connected to a valve 40 so as to relieve the pressure on the undersurface 23 of the piston at the end of the stroke, fluid escaping via the bore 30, the split 29 and at least one bore 14 in the cylinder wall covered by an elastic garter seal 17. The piston and cylinder unit may form part of a hydraulic lifting jack.
