Abstract

1,236,384. Hydraulic rams. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. July 26, 1968 [Aug. 11, 1967], No. 37075/67. Heading F1P. A single-stroke hydraulic ram comprises a cylinder 1 having slidable therein a plunger piston 6 provided with an axial bore 8 in which is disposed a gas-loaded floating piston 9 arranged to absorb pressure peaks caused by high inertia loads. The floating piston 9 is normally urged against a split ring 12 by gas admitted to a chamber 17 through a charging valve 16 in the plunger endpiece 10. The ram is retracted by allowing fluid to exhaust through a port 18 under the action of the load, and when the exhaust is terminated the resulting pressure build-up is absorbed by displacement of the floating piston towards the position shown.
