Abstract

929,528. Piston packing. RHEINSTAHI. WANKEIM G.m.b.H. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 13, 1960], No. 27928/61. Class 122 (1). In a sealing arrangement between the piston 2 and the cylinder 1 of an hydraulic pit prop extension of the grooved piston packing ring 6 is prevented by a wedge-shaped supporting ring 11 of elastically deformable material, such as a polyamide resin, e.g. nylon, which bears against the cylinder wall and is arranged on that face of the ring not exposed to fluid pressure and a shoulder 4 of the piston. The packing ring 6 is mounted in a recess in the piston 2 and is retained by a flange 9 or by a ring engaging in the groove 16. The ring 11 which is slightly compressed radially abuts against inclined and plane surfaces on the ring 6 and piston 2 respectively and may extend over the whole width of the ring 6. In modifications, the inclined and plane surfaces are formed respectively on the piston and on the ring 6 or the ring 11 has an equilateral triangular crosssection engaging inclined surfaces on both the piston and the ring 6. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the bearing surface 25 of the ring 23 is inclined to the adjoining piston surface providing a gap 24 when the prop is unloaded.
