Abstract

726,809. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. GIRLING, Ltd. Sept. 23, 1953 [Oct. 11, 1952], No. 25525/52. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A seal for relatively slidable members, such as a piston and cylinder, comprises a rubber or like ring a of rectangular cross-section in its free state and received in an annular groove having a frusto-conical base c provided in the piston or cylinder, the depth of the groove at one end being substantially equal to the radial thickness of the ring and at the other end less than the radial thickness so that when the ring is positioned in the groove its outer surface is frusto-conical and projects beyond the piston or cylinder at one end. The end e of the groove is at right angles to the base and the end f may be radial or oppositely-inclined to the end e.
