Abstract

716,545. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. March 3, 1952 [March 2, 1951]. No. 5174/51. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) A seal between two relatively slidable members comprises a flat sealing ring 8 of rubber or like flexible material located between two supporting surfaces on one of the members and having an edge in sealing contact with the other member, the supporting surfaces being a clearance fit with respect to the other member. The piston 1 of a doubleacting hydraulic jack is formed with a central annular flange 2 and packed by a pair of similar sealing assemblies located on either side of the flange 2 and each comprising a flat sealing ring 8 loosely housed in a recess between a ring 3 fitted on the piston body and a ring 4 mounted on an axial extension 5 of the ring 3, the complete assembly being held in place by a washer 9 and a spring ring 10. The rings 3 and 4 are sealed to the piston by flexible seal rings 6 and 7 respectively. For a two inch diameter piston, the sealing ring 8 may project beyond the rings 3, 4 by ten to fifteen thousandths of an inch, have an interference of five thousandths of an inch with respect to the cylinder bore 11, and an axial thickness of one thirty-second of an inch; the depth of the containing recess being from forty-eight to fifty-two thousandths of an inch. The invention may be used as a piston rod packing, the sealing ring 8 being mounted with its inner edge in contact with the piston rod. Specification 716,544 is referred to.
