763,187. Stuffing-box substitutes. COLLINS, J. E. Sept. 1, 1954 [June 18, 1954], No. 25411/54. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] A packing assembly for use between relatively movable members comprises an annular packing ring having circular section annular sealing portions interconnected by a web and clamped between annular elements so that at least one sealing portion is urged transversely into contact with one member. A valve plunger 11 reciprocable in a valve body 10 (see also Group XXIX) is sealed by a V-section packing ring 15 having O-ring portions 15a, 15b, 15c interconnected by webs 15d, 15e and clamped between annular elements 17, 18 and 19 having their end faces abutting the ring shaped so that portions 15b and 15c are urged transversely into sealing contact with the valve body. The ring 15 is mechanically locked in the assembly by the elements 17, 18 and 19 and is made of rubber or other resilient material and the portion 15a is a tight sliding fit on the plunger 11 and has a slight axial clearance between adjacent opposing faces 17a and 18a of elements 17 and 18. In a modification, the faces 17a, 18a diverge radially outwards. In another modification, Fig. 9, the portion 15c and web 15e of the ring and the annular element 19 are omitted and the ring 15 formed by sealing portions 115a and 115b, is clamped directly between two annular elements 117 and 118.
