Abstract
771,887. Stuffing-box substitutes. MUNRO, R., and KINGSBURY, W. G. April 20, 1955 [May 17, 1954], No. 14372/54. Class 122 (5). A packing-ring device for a reciprocatmg or rotating shaft 3 comprises a pair of coaxial frusto-conical split rings 8, 9 pressed into a coned housing 5 by resilient means such as a spring 7, the splits in the rings being angularly displaced from each other and the rings being secured together on their abutting faces by means such as a small weld area midway between the slits. A clearance 12 is left between the rings and the shaft for a major portion of the rings so that only a comparatively small area of their inner diameters is contracted into sealing engagement with the shaft. The spring 7 also acts to press the housing 5 against one end of an outer housing 1, with the interposition of a resilient ring 6 of synthetic rubber or other material. According to the Provisional Specification, fluid pressure may be employed instead of the spring 7.
