1367377 Seals COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE DES TELECOMMUNICATIONS CIT-ALCATEL 30 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 30844/72 Heading F2B A seal for a rotary or reciprocating shaft 1 comprises a bush 6 which is movable to a first position to compress a plastically-deformable static seal ring 10 when the apparatus is at rest and to a second position to compress a dynamic seal ring 11 when the apparatus is in operation. As shown, the seal is used in a rotatable and reciprocating shaft 1 between a vacuum 2 and atmosphere 3. When at rest, gas pressure supplied through duct 15 exerts a pressure on the face 17 to move the bush 6 axially and compress the static seal ring 10. Before the shaft 1 is set in motion, the gas pressure is supplied to the other face 18 to cause the bush to compress the dynamic seal ring 11. Leaks may be detected through ducts 21, 22. In a second embodiment, the bush in urged by a compression spring into engagement with the static seal ring when at rest.
