Abstract

738,105. Stuffing-box substitutes. MASCHINENFABRIK ESSLINGEN. June 12, 1953 [June 18, 1952], No. 16175/53. Class 122 (5). In a seal between relatively rotating parts, such as a shaft 2 and casing 5, in which an annular sealing member 1 is secured to one part 5 and has a sealing lip 10 lying against the other part 2, an annular cavity is provided under the lip 10 between the edge 11 of the lip and its sealing area and the lip is arranged so that in operation surface portions of the part 5 being sealed pass alternately into the cavity and under the sealing area. The cavity is formed by chamfering or rounding off the lip edge 11 which lies in a plane inclined to the shaft axis 2a or is, alternatively, of curved or wavy form. In a modification, Fig. 4, in which the sealing lip is urged by a spring 4 into sealing contact with a collar 22 on the shaft the lip edge 13 is eccentric to the shaft axis 2a.
