Abstract

724,859. Shaft seals. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. May 19, 1953, No. 14061/53. Class 122 (5). A shaft seal is mounted in a cup-shaped metallic casing 10, 11 whose outer peripheral surface is of slightly less diameter than the shaft housing bore and has bonded thereto a cylinder 16 of rubber or like material having an outer diameter greater than the housing bore and having a portion 17 adjacent one of its ends reduced to a diameter not greater than the housing bore to facilitate entering the seal in the housing. The cylinder 16 is integral with the remainder of the seal which has a sealing lip 12 urged into contact with the shaft by a garter spring retained in a groove 13 by an integral flange 18. In a modification the flange 18 is omitted and the casing is of U- section and may be formed by two abutting L-shape portions.
