Abstract

760,453. Shaft seals. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. Oct. 8, 1954 [Oct. 23, 1953], No. 29077/54. Class 122 (5). A shaft seal comprises an element 4, 5 of elastic material secured, preferably by bonding, to a metal L-section shell 1 and provided with a sealing lip 8 disposed within the shell and urged into contact with the shaft by a garter spring 9 and a second sealing lip 14, of material different from that of the element, cemented in a recess 13 in the element adjacent the inner edge of the annular wall 3 of the shell. The lip 14, of leather, is tapered and may be arranged to act in the same direction as the lip 8, as shown in Fig. 2, or oppositely thereto to act as a grit excluder. The cylindrical wall 4 of the element is provided with a lead-in portion 6 to facilitate entry of the seal in its housing. In a modifica. tion the lip 14 is reinforced by an L-section metal ring and in another modification it is composed of elastic material faced on its shaftengaging portion with fabric.
