Abstract

469,110. Stuffing-box packing. GARLOCK PACKING CO. Jan. 17, 1936, No. 1625. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1935. [Class 122 (v)] A rubber &c. shaft packing ring 22 of channel section is expanded by a spring 26 also of channel form having a flange portion 29 and resilient fingers 32. The flange portion may also be slotted, Fig. 3, to form fingers 33. The packing may be mounted in a casing 24 or may be secured in a recess in a housing surrounding the shaft by a cover plate. Two such packings may be mounted in a single casing with their flanges 25 facing in the same or in opposite directions. The packing may be secured to the shaft, Fig. 11, with its outer flange 25h in sealing contact, with the shaft housing. Alternatively, the periphery of the packing may be recessed to channel form, Fig. 15, and its flange 25m pressed by the spring 26m into rubbing contact with a radial wall of the shaft housing ; the casing 39m of the packing being secured to the shaft. The spring may be of channel form with flanges 49, 50, Fig. 14, at its inner and outer peripheries, and rendered circumferentially resilient by radial slots 31k, 34k.
