788,385. Stuffing-box substitutes. MAGNETIC SEAL CORPORATION. June 25, 1956, No. 19564/56. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXII] A rotary shaft seal comprises two sealing rings 17, 18 urged into facial sealing contact by magnetic means carried by one of the rings, one ring 17 being fixed to the shaft housing 11 and the other 18 being rotatable with the shaft 15, axially slidable thereon and sealed thereto by an O-ring 26 of resilient material compressed between the shaft and the ring. Both rings 17 and 18 are made of low-carbon steel and a number of circumferentially spaced plugs 40 of magnetizable material such as " Alnico " are secured in recesses in the ring 17 which, with the plugs, is permanently magnetized and attracts the ring 18 so that a carbon insert 43 in the latter contacts a lip 19 on the ring 17. The magnetic contact pressure between the rings is augmented by the pressure differential across the ring 18 due to the sealed fluid pressure. Each plug 40 is surrounded by a sleeve 39 of non-magnetic material, such as lead or brass or, alternatively, the plugs may be coated with non-magnetic material. If the housing is made of magnetic conducting material a sleeve 44 of non-magnetic material is interposed between the ring 17 and the housing.
