Abstract

1,188,859. Mechanical seals. BURMAH OIL TRADING Ltd. 19 Sept., 1968 [28 Sept., 1967], No. 44206/67. Heading F2B. Secondary sealing means in a mechanical seal comprises a P.T.F.E. ring 6 which is housed in a groove 5 in one, 2, of the seal rings and has an axially-opening annular recess in which a resilient member, e.g. a coil spring 9, is located. The seal ring 2 is mounted on a shaft 3 for rotation therewith and is urged by a spring 4 into facial sealing contact with a non-rotary seal ring 1. The spring 9, which may be of stainless steel or nickel alloy, is mounted in a circumferential groove 7 in the ring 6, being inserted therein through an annular slot 8.
