In a rubbing-collar type seal comprising a rotary sealing ring of resilient material in facial sealing contact with a stationary member, the contact face of the rotary ring has one or more radial recesses or ridges therein. A rubber ring 11, Fig. 1a, is frictionally secured to a rotary shaft 12 and has a lip 13 which engages a stationary surface 14 and has U-shaped recesses 15 in its outer periphery. In a modification, Fig. 2, radial grooves 25 extend from the shaft 22 to a continuous annular sealing surface 26. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3a, the lip 33 has radial recesses 35 and 351 on its inner and outer sides respectively. The lip may be urged against the stationary sealing surface by garter spring (58), Fig. 4 (not shown). In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6b, the lip 73 has serrations 75 in its outer periphery and a cut 77 in its contact surface thereby forming a sealing edge 76. The recesses in the lip may be square (Fig. 8) or circular (Fig. 9).
