Abstract

678,981. Stuffing-box substitutes. CROUCH, J. F. J., and NOTARI, R. April 4, 1951 [May 8, 1950], No. 11435/50. Class 122(v) A fluid-tight seal comprises two relatively rotatable sealing elements each of which is acted upon by one of a pair of bodies cooperating magnetically to maintain the elements in sealing contact. A permanent magnet B free to move axially along .a rotating shaft 10 but held against rotation by a screw 15 threaded into a housing 17 and engaging a groove 16 in the magnet carries in a groove in one of its faces a hard metallic ring 19 that makes rubbing sealing contact with a carbon ring 14 similarly carried by a second permanent magnet A secured to the shaft 10 by a screw 11. The two magnets are urged toward one another by magnetic attraction and one end of a flexible bellows 20 is moulded to the face of the magnet B remote from the magnet A, the other end being secured to the housing 17. The permanent magnets A or B may either or both be replaced by either electromagnets or a ring carrying a number of axially extending bar magnets. The fluid pressure force tending to separate the magnets may be counteracted by exposing to fluid pressure an area on the face of the magnet B remote from the magnet A.
