Abstract

851,246. Stuffing-box substitutes. SUPER OIL SEALS & GASKETS Ltd. July 3, 1959 [July 4, 1958], No. 21540/58. Class 122 (5). A rubbing-collar type seal comprises a hard sealing ring 11 attached to a rubber &c. housing 12 having two locating surfaces one, 17, parallel to the axis of the seal and the other, 15, normal thereto and a metal cup member 18 and a conical compression spring 19 both located within the housing, the larger diameter end of the spring being seated in the cup member and the smaller end bearing against the housing adjacent the ring 11. Spigots 13 and 14 on the housing serve to retain the smaller end of the spring and the member 18 respectively. The sealing ring may be of carbon, ceramic or a high temperature polymer. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the seal is mounted in the casing 20 of a rotary shaft 21 and the ring 11 is urged by the spring 19 into sealing contact with a member 23 secured to the shaft. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the seal rotates with the shaft and the ring 11 contacts a face of the casing.
