Abstract

522,720. Stuffing-box substitutes. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO., Ltd., and SPARKES, H. T. Dec. 17, 1938, No. 36849. [Class 122 (v)] , A sealing device, for a shaft 3 passing through an aperture 2 in the wall 1 of a casing, comprises a ring 4 pressed against and in face contact with the wall 1, and a flexible tubular member 5 of non-metallic resilient material, such as rubber, at one end embracing or positively engaging the ring 4 in sealing relationship, and at the other end engaging the shaft in sealing relationship. The ring 4 is thus rotated by the shaft. The member 5 may engage the circumference of the ring 4 or it may be bonded thereto. A spring 6, which may be embedded in the member 5, may press the ring 4 against the wall 1. Where a shaft'passes through a pair of walls two sealing devices may be arranged back to back separated or not by a collar 7 on the shaft.
