Abstract

514,969. Stuffing-box substitutes. PACKLESS GLAND CO., Ltd., and HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN-. May 19, 1938, No. 14995. [Class 122 (v)] In a gland for sealing the joint between any two relatively rotatable parts, of the type comprising a sealing ring 5 attached to one end of a flexible metal bellows 1 and pressed axially into frictional sliding contact with one of the relatively rotatable parts (fiange 7 on shaft 8), the scaling ring 5 is coupled to the second relatively rotatable part (ring 11) by means of a mechanical driving coupling (three pins 13 projecting through holes in a flange 12 on an annular carrier 4), and the joint at the other end of the bellows is made by means of a packing ring 3 compressed axially between the bellows and a surface 9 fixed to the second relatively rotatable part (ring 11), said packing ring 3 permitting of rotational adjustment of the bellows 1 and thereby ensuring that the torque is taken by the coupling device. The sealing ring 5 may be made of compressed copper, tin and carbon dust calcined to form a solid porous mass which is impregnated with oil, and a washer or packing ring 6 of synthetic rubber or the like may be compressed between the ring 5 and the bottom of the carrier 4. The packing ring 3 also may be made of synthetic rubber or the like. The bellows may be associated with a coiled spring adapted to bear against either or both of the carriers 2, 4.
