Abstract

493,573. Stuffing - box substitutes. DUPREE, JUN., S. F. July 28, 1937, Nos. 20920 and 20921. Convention dates, Aug. 27, 1936 and Oct. 2, 1936. [Class 122 (v)] A sealing means between the casing and impeller of a rotary pump comprises a ring 19 non-rotatably mounted in one member and pressed into contact with a shoulder 16d in the other member by a spring 20 acting through a resilient member 21 adapted to protect the spring against the action of pump fluid. The resilient member 21 may be of U -section, Fig. 5, or in the form of a ring 30, Fig. 9, or may comprise two rings 132, Fig. 20, connected by a bellows 134. The end faces of the member may be serrated as at 21a. When of U-form the member is supported by two cup members 22 which may be telescopically arranged and formed with external flanges to limit the amount of relative axial movement between them. The ring 19 is provided with internal or external projections adapted to engage recesses in the housing or impeller or in a casing member 26 carried thereby to prevent relative rotation, and is retained in position when the impeller is disassembled by an abutment in the casing or by a spring ring 26x. Axial movement of the shaft is limited by packing rings 25, 18 arranged between shoulders 10b, 24, and 26a, 16b on the shaft. The rings 18, 19 and 25 may be of carbon or of the materials known under the Registered Trade Marks " Bakelite " and " Micarta." The resilient member 21 may be of cork or of the materials known under the Registered Trade Marks " Duprene " and "Garlock."
