Abstract

483,280. Stuffing - box substitutes. GILMAN, G. P. Oct. 12, 1936, No. 27668. Convention date, March 27. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft-packing comprising a member 17 pressed resiliently into contact with a cooperating member 24, one member is of softer material than the other and is formed with sharp ridges, provided for example between concentric or spiral grooves, adapted initially to wear rapidly to form a series of sealing surfaces. The member 17 may be carried by a resilient diaphragm 35 which presses it into contact with a shoulder on the shaft. Alternatively one or two cup shaped elements 17, Fig. 6, containing packing 49, e.g. of rubber or felt, and rotating with the shaft may be pressed into contact with an insert or inserts 55, 57 in the casing by a spring 45 acting through cover rings. In a further form the spring 45 acts on the base of a cup shaped member carrying packing and a cover ring adapted to bear on the insert in the casing.
