Abstract

458,262. Stuffing - box substitutes. MURRAY, W., and WESTON & CO., Ltd., C., 2, Portsmouth Street, Kingsway, London. June 16, 1936, No. 14394/35. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft packing wherein a rubbing ring 5 is clutched to the shaft and pressed into contact with the housing by a rubber &c. sleeve 7 compressed axially into a tapered bore in the ring, the part of the sleeve exterior to the ring is free to distort out of contact with the shaft. A second rubbing ring 6 may be provided at the opposite end of the sleeve. When applied to the impeller shaft of a pump the sleeve 7 is compressed between a shoulder 19, Fig. 3, on a member 16 keyed to the pump shaft, and a rubbing ring 20. The rubbing surfaces of the rings 5, 6, 20 may have carbon or other friction reducing inserts x.
