Abstract

657,101. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. Feb. 26, .1948, No. 5776. Convention date, March 1, 1945. [Class 122(v)] In a rotary sealing means betweer relatively rotating parts, e.g. a shaft and a shaft housing, the means comprise, ar a x i a 11 y extensible sleeve 24 made of metal or other material capable of withstanding relatively high temperatures and having at least one fold 25; an axially fixed compressible support 29 for one end 26 of the sleeve 24 encircling the shaft, etc.; an axially movable washer 21 adjacent the other end 27 of the sleeve 24 and in sealing contact with the housing etc.; resilient compressible means 30 interposed between the end 27 of the sleeve 24 and the washer 21; means 31 for compressing the support 29 to effect a seal between the sleeve 24 and the support 29, and means 32 for compressing the means 30 to effect a seal between the sleeve 24 and the washer 21. A shell 35 having notches engaging grooves in the washer 21 and a pin 41 and slot 40 driving connection with the band 31, has a shoulder 37 which engages, under the influence of a spring 32 acting on a flange 34, a brass washer 38 between which and the flanged end 27 is a resilient band 39. The band 31 is of metal and has slots 42 which engage pins 43 embedded in the ring 29. The rings 29, 30, 39 may be of synthetic rubber, e.g. " Neoprene " (R.T.M.) which. is normally resilient, but which loses its resiliency at relatively high temperatures. In a modification, the band 29 is replaced by a resilient envelope enclosing the cylindrical end 26 of the sleeve 24.
