Abstract

854,896. Magnetic couplings. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1958 [Dec. 17, 1957], No. 39631/58. Class 35. A magnetic coupling has a rotor 72 bearing salient poles which is sealed within a closed system and is driven by a rotating field provided by magnets on rotor 22 which is turned relatively slowly by motor via reduction gearing (Fig. 1B, not shown). Rotor 22 comprises a non- magnetic stainless-steel supporting sleeve 66 to whose inner surface are secured four equally spaced clamping members 76 each extending along most of the length of the sleeve, which clamping members secure four magnets 88 inside the sleeve. The magnets equal in length to the clamping members, are curved (Fig. 2) and are laterally magnetized, being arranged so that similar poles of two magnets are in contact with each clamping member 76, the clamping members thus forming extensions of the magnets towards rotor housing 48 and driven rotor 72. If rotor 72 is used within a highly pressurized sealed system rotor housing 48 is formed of material having low or intermediate permeability and is sufficiently thick to withstand the pressure. Inside housing 48 is driven rotor 72 which has four salient poles 104 and is of non- magnetized magnetic material. Rotor 72 rotates on ball-bearings 120, 122 which are so mounted that removal of housing extension 140 by removal of bolts 150 allows the driven rotor assembly to be withdrawn from the housing in one piece since outer race 124 of bearing 120 slides freely in housing 48. Similarly field rotor 22 is mounted on ball-bearings 50, 70 and can be withdrawn by removing annular lock-nut 62 and lock-washer 64, inner race 84 of bearing 70 sliding freely on housing 48. Specification 765,040 is referred to.
