Abstract

888,514. Electromagnetic couplings. PUMPINDUSTRI A.B. June 28, 1958, No. 20799/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XXVI] The impeller 28 of a centrifugal pump is journalled on a stationary shaft 32 and driven by an electric motor 16 through a magnetic coupling comprising permanent magnet rings 62, 63, carried by a non-magnetic driving member 61 and permanent magnet rings 56, 57 carried by an extension of the impeller, a cup-shaped non- magnetic diaphragm 66 being interposed to prevent leakage of pumped liquid. An outer rim of the diaphragm 66 is clamped between the pump casing and a ring 14 that is interposed between the pump and motor casings. Each magnet ring is formed with a circumferential series of magnetic poles, separated by non- magnetic material. The axial dimensions of the magnet rings may be 8 mm. for the rings 56, 62 and 12 mm. for the rings 57, 63. Different combinations of these two sizes may be used to obtain total axial dimensions of 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 mm. &c., to provide a desired torque capacity. The impeller 28 and a clamping- ring 58 are of non-magnetic material such as light metal, brass or synthetic resin. If the rings 56, 57 are of ceramic material they may be a loose fit on the impeller extension and be held concentrically on the latter by means of 0-rings of rubber or the like located in annular grooves. Auxiliary vanes 75 on the back of the impeller reduce or reverse the downward axial thrust of the impeller and also prevent iron particles or other impurities in the liquid from being deposited on the magnet rings.
