Abstract

1,179,322. Magnetic couplings. CARRIER CORP. 26 April, 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 19191/67. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] A magnetic coupling between a motor 3 and a pump 4 (see Division F1) comprises ceramic magnetic rings 14, 14A mounted on plates 57 of magnetic material, such as soft iron, carried by flange portions 55, 56 and 44, 47 as of non- magnetic stainless steel. Alternatively, the cylindrical flange portions 47, 56 and plates 57 are omitted and the rings 14, 14A are bonded directly to flange portions 44, 55 of magnetic material, such as soft iron. A closure diaphragm 8 for a chamber 27 is preferably of non-magnetic electrically-non-conductive material such as fibreglass-reinforced epoxy resin to eliminate eddy current losses of the coupling, but for some applications it is of stiffer material such as nickel alloy. Pumped fluid is circulated through the pump bearing clearance, the chamber 27 and shaft passages 31, 32 back to the main flow for cooling and lubrication purposes. A similar pump is similarly coupled to the other end of the motor shaft.
