Abstract

661,756. Dynamo - electric machines. BAUER, S. G., and MURGATROYD, W. Jan. 27, 1950 [Jan. 27, 1949], No. 2344/49. Class 35. A centrifugal pump for liquid metals comprises means for producing a magnetic field axially across an annular gap to induce rotation and consequent centrifugal pumping of liquid metal in the gap. The magnetic field may itself rotate and cause rotation of the metal by induction, or it may be stationary and direct current may be passed radially from the metal inlet to the peripheral volute to produce the tangential force on the metal. In its developed form, the pump comprises an inlet tube 10 connected at its flanged end 11 to a suitably shaped steel disc 14 by a spider 12 and screw 13. Secured on a common baseplate with the disc 14, and a laminated magnetic ring 17 and a steel plate having a circular groove 19 of graded depth terminating in an axial discharge port (not shown). A further laminated ring core 26 co-operating with the ring 17 and having radial slots for the windings 28 is secured by attachment to the inlet pipe 10 and faced with an insulating plate 25 bonded in position. The thickness of the magnetic gap 24, between the plate 25 and the bottom assembly, through which the liquid metal flows, is adjusted by a spacing ring 23 and shims under the head of screw 13. The gap through which the metal flows may be frusto-conical instead of flat.
