Abstract

1382185 Circumferential-flow pumps ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 28 Nov 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 54860/72 Heading F1C In a fuel pump unit comprising a side channel pump and an electric motor in which the airgap surrounding the motor armature forms a part of a main fuel supply line through the unit, the fuel is pumped from the side channel by way of a pressure port in a direction radially of the impeller axis and through the air-gap and is arranged to lubricate bearings of the unit. Fuel flows from an inlet 5 to the side channel 26 via an inlet port 25, and is discharged radially inwardly through a pressure port 27 to an annular groove 28 and thence via passages 41 to the space around the motor armature 11, finally being delivered via an outlet 22. The side channel pump impeller 10 and a cover 15 for the armature are formed in one piece from plastics material, the ribs defining the passages 41 acting as centrifugal pump impeller vanes to assist the pumping action. A relief passage 29 is closed by a relief valve 30 comprising a plate 31 pivoted at 32 and pressed against the passage by a spring 34 having an adjustable abutment 35 carried by a stationary spindle 8 on which the rotating parts are journalled through fuel-lubricated bearings 14. The side channel 26 ends in a portion 39 of half the radial width, the portion 39 being relieved of pressure by a cavity 37 in radial alignment with the passage 29 and leading to the annular groove 28 via a radial passage 38.
