Abstract

978,683. Centrifugal pumps. P. PENSABENE. May 12, 1961 [Oct. 22, 1960], No. 36318/60. Heading FIC. [Also in Division H2] A centrifugal pump comprises a radially bladed impeller which rotates adjacent a wall of the liquid channel connecting the inlet and outlet ports with adjustable clearance to provide a variable leakage gap and has means for adjusting the gap. In the pipeline pump shown, a rotor comprising a disc 7 carrying shrouded or unshrouded impeller blades e and a motor armature 6, rotates about a stationary shaft b, which supports the motor stator 16 and its casing 15. The stator 16 is isolated from the pumped liquid by a disc 17. The pump output is adjustable by rotation of a nut a on the end of shaft b over a range limited by a pin g, whereby the shaft is moved axially to adjust the leakage gap d between the rotor and the adjacent wall of the casing. The movement is accommodated by resilient sealing rings c, h, which may be of rubber and also serve to reduce noise and vibration. Precise adjustment of gap d may be arranged by an indexing device. The motor, shaft and impeller assembly may be removed axially as one unit after removal of nut a. The motor may be of conventional cylindrical type.
