Abstract
1295269 Centrifugal pumps JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 April 1971 [9 Dec 1969] 59940/69 Heading F1C [Also in Divisions B2] An electrically driven pump comprises a chamber 30 having an inlet and a pair of concentric annular outlets 31,32 and forming part of the rotor of an induction motor, each chamber outlet being formed with impeller blades 33, 34, and a casing 35 surrounding the chamber and forming part of the stator of the motor, the casing having a pair of passages 36, 40 each of which communicates with a respective one of the chamber outlets and with outlets 37,41 from the pump. The pump shown is submerged in a fuel tank. Vapour in the fuel entering the chamber 30 is separated centrifugally from the liquid, whereby substantially vapour-free liquid enters the outlet 31 and is discharged at 37 to an engine while a mixture of vapour and liquid enters the outlet 32 and passes to a further chamber 38 in the rotor and is discharged via a stationary passage 40 to the interior of the tank via the outlet 41. Centrifugal action forms a liquid seal against the walls of the chamber 38, to a radial depth determined by a flange 39. The liquid seal prevents the return of liquid to the chamber 30 via the outlet 41. In another embodiment, the chamber 38 and passage 40 for the mixture of vapour and liquid are replaced by a volute passage similar to the volute passage 36 for the liquid and communicating with the tank via a non-return valve.
